Battlestar 2003 @ 08:23 am

Current Mood: excited excited
Current Music: Garth Brooks - Callin' Baton Rouge

Okay, are gazerwolf and I the ONLY ones who actually LIKED the new Battlestar Galactica? The only thing I didn't like was Sci-Fi Channel advertising it as a miniseries instead of a two-part movie ... miniseries should be at least 3 episodes.

But I really, really hope they start production on it as a regular series! It wasn't nearly long enough, and I want to see where they go with the show from here.

I haven't seen it yet, but everyone I know *loved* it.

I will say this for the new BG--there ARE some things I did genuinely like about it. But generally these were in the broader strokes of how they set up situations and plot events, and in the battle scenes (which were admittedly cool). Most of the time I was hard-pressed, though, to see why I should actually care about any of the characters presented to me. O.x

I didn't hate it. I knew there were Issues (tm) with it from the start, so I decided right away it was this other show that happened to have the same name.

Notes to the Sciffy channel:

1) Don't try to do sex. You're not good at it and it shows.

2) Blue lights are not a substitute for atmosphere.

3) Jerky-camera SFX effects are already really, really old.

4) I didn't think Colonel Tigh could be made any whiter, but you did it! Congrats on that.

5) Humans in a culture thousands of light-years and thousands of time-years divergent probably aren't wearing clothing quite that 90s. (Except for Greg Brady, or whoever the hell it actually was, who appears to have been teleported in from 25 years before. What the fuck was up with that?) At least try, okay? God.

6) Cooling fins as decoration went out in the 30s. Don't try it again.

But I did like some things.

I liked the Secretary of Education becoming president because everybody else was dead. That was neat.

I liked the new Starbuck.

I thought they did a good job of handling the total annihilation of life on planets. Pattern-bombing with dirty nukes is a much more effective approach than laser-firing fighters blowing up grandstands.

I thought the new Commander Adama was okay.

oh wait, that's in things I HATED.

The new vipers were okay. I liked that the Cylon fighters were just, you know, people/robot/ships, not machines with robots inside. That makes more sense.

I liked that the guy Baltar fingered was, in fact, a Cylon agent. Oopsie.

I'd give it a few episodes if they made them, but, like Anna, I'd have to have more reasons to like more characters than I do now to stick with it.
