When it rains, it pours

I've been a full-time night auditor for over twelve years, part-time night manager the last few months. We've been sold out this week but it's a convention of little old ladies, so the nights have been very peaceful.

Until this morning.

I'm finishing up my "quiet night" MOD log when I overhear the desk clerk asking the operator to call an ambulance. WTF? Wasn't sure I heard that right, and since they aren't calling the manager (me) in on it per the usual injury procedures, I just listen for a bit. Yep, ambulance is on the way, guy walked in from outside, straight to the desk, said he'd broken his shoulder and could we please call an ambulance for him?

I'm getting ticked at this point for being left out of the loop. Yeah, I'm only a manager part-time, but I was still the one on duty. So I come up behind the operator (who's been here longer than I have and should know better), clear my throat, and ask her what's going on. She tells me the stuff I've already overheard, then remembers I'm MOD and apologizes for forgetting to tell me sooner.

So I go out to the lobby to check on the guy about the same time the ambulance shows up, and find our Director of Finance (my boss for audit) taking his turn monitoring the lobby had just come in too. They saw a higher-up manager than me first, so I didn't feel quite so bad about getting ignored.

Anyway, paramedics brace the guy's shoulder and check his blood sugar (apparently he's diabetic) and start getting him on the gurney when the just-arrived morning desk guy comes over and tells me he just got a call from a guest upstairs. Her mom's got a sinus infection and having trouble breathing, and could we get them some medical help? WTF??

I ask one of the paramedics about it (and the Finance boss at the same time), they say they'll call another squad since they have to take the first guy in. So Boss and I head upstairs to check on her and let her know help's on the way. We're only there a minute when there's a knock on her door; one of the paramedics came up to check on her while the other guys got the first patient ready to go. By the time the second ambulance crew gets there, she's already decided no, she doesn't want to fool with the hospital because they're going home to Washington state tomorrow. No, they can't give her anything to clear out the sinus crud in her room, so she finally gets us to call a taxi for her to go to an urgent treatment center.

Huge group, quiet nights all week, and now back-to-back ambulance calls. *shakes head*

Whoops, Boss just came in and said they had a guy in another room call down complaining about a bad cough and high fever. Make that three calls, and time for me to get the heck out of here.

I'm so glad this group's leaving tomorrow morning.
