Dear Cashiers: @ 12:51 pm

(And yes, servers & bartenders, this means you too.)

I really don't care whether your cash is all facing the same way. Backwards, forwards, upside-down, any order, doesn't matter. I only ask for a few little things in your drop envelopes:

1) Keep all the bills of the same denomination together. Don't throw in some $20s and $10s, then hide another $20 in the middle of the $5s. I really don't care if you want to put $20s between $5s and $1s, just keep them grouped together.

2) Keep the bills flat. Do not fold, crumple, wad up, or otherwise jam them into the envelope. If you have a really thick stack use two envelopes, don't just cram them in to make it fit. Fold the whole envelope if you want to, but don't fold the bills up inside the envelope.

3) If the hotel owes you money back, don't seal the envelope. How am I supposed to put your charge tips in there if you've glued it shut?

3a) If you are dropping cash/checks/change, be sure the envelope is sealed. If your cash falls out loose inside the drop safe, it's not my problem to figure out who dropped it.

4) You have a first and last name; use them. Signing only your first name (with or without a last initial) is not acceptable. We have over a hundred employees; you may not be the only Joe S. working here. You're not in kindergarten any more, grow up.

Following these simple rules makes my job a lot easier. Remember, I also keep track of payroll. Don't tempt me to lose your paycheck.

PS. 5) Do not drop over $1 in loose change or more than $10 in $5s and $1s combined unless that's the only thing you have. When you come in the next day with a handful of big bills needing change, I will secretly laugh at you. (Thanks to bkmichele over at Crazy Hotel Workers for suggesting this one.)

Tell me about it. The two KM's drive me nuts. At least the bar one usually just signs her last name, the desk one's first name only. It's the bar one that hasn't figured out how to seal a full envelope.

And speaking of checks, they came in today, Security has them. I'm off tomorrow, back Friday.
