Whoa.

In the "Can't judge a book by its cover" department...

I met a sweet older black lady at the bus station this morning. She was well-dressed, silk blouse and gold jewelry, salt-and-pepper grey hair pulled back with fancy combs. She said something I couldn't quite hear so I paused my Zune, pulled out my earbuds and asked her to repeat it.

"What are you knitting?"

"Ah, little squares for an afghan, something small I can tuck in my pocket on the bus."

"Where'd ya get that? I've been looking and never seen anything like it."

"The double-points?" I asked, holding up one knitting needle. "I bought a set on Ebay a few years back, a bunch of different sizes."

She shook her head. "No, that," pointing toward my chest.

"Oh, the headphones. They're Phillips I think, got 'em at Target for around twenty bucks."

The lady mades an exasperated little noise and shook her head, pointing again. "No, Honey, the star! Where'd ya get the star? I've got a couple of plain ones at home but I've never seen one with a stone behind it like yours."

Blink. Blink. A woman I'd thought of as a "proper church lady" wanted to know where I'd gotten my pentacle. "Oh, thanks!" I'm pretty sure I blushed. "It was my first mother's day gift from my husband, about twelve years ago now. Pretty sure he got it at one of those little cart stands in the Mall."

"Wow, looks new. I'll keep checking when I'm out there, you never know what those little places will carry."

Nope, you really don't.
