Stopping Don't Ask, Don't Tell is a good start, too bad it won't extend to religious beliefs as well as those in the bedroom.

| CommentsIs there religious persecution in the military? I do agree that religious choices should all be allowed and accepted. I'm not 100% sure, but I've heard they refused to put a pentacle on a Wiccan soldier's tombstone, and they only take applications from Chaplains that follow major mainstream religions. I'd heard that, too. I was hoping things had improved. MSNBC ran an article about a new worship space for earth-centered religions in Colorado on/near a military base. >>Wiccans get worship area at Air Force Academy A double circle of stones sits atop a hill on the Colorado Springs campus http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35188048/ns/us_news-faith/ << Doesn't remove the other injustices, but it's progress. I have a Pagan friend who was in the Navy, who told me a funny story... So they started a small on-ship coven, with three or four Pagan (or was it Wiccan? I forget...) crewmembers, and word got out on the ship that there was a Witch's coven on board... so they were soon approached by some enthusiastic fellow crewmembers to ask if they could, you know, cast a spell to protect the ship and the crew, which they happily did. Buuuut.. there is always a but, a few days later, she heard that some Christian crewmembers were having a prayer session that was meant to lift whatever "spell" and bring the unbelievers to the light... and when she heard about it, she FLIPPED, and told her superior officer that, according to her belief system, that prayer was essentially a psychic assault -- in other words, a direct assault on her person... and her SO got REAL interested in hearing about that... at which point he SERIOUSLY chewed out the Christian prayer group for what they did! So yea, there is a pretty good track record of freedom of religion and inclusion in the military, from what I have heard! |
