Last night's CSI:NY got me thinking about 9/11. The main cop lost his wife in the towers, and there was a sweet scene at the end where he goes back to ground zero at night, reaches his hand up to hang onto the fence and leans his forehead against it, and you see he's still wearing his wedding band.

boingboing_net recently mentioned Post Secret, one of the secrets also got me thinking.

"Everyone who knew me before 9/11 believes I'm dead."

It never occurred to me that some of the missing might have taken that chance to run away from their past and start over. They very well could have used that cover to escape - an abusive relationship, a mountain of debt, a criminal past, or any number of other things.

If running away from one's life is such an alien concept that it hadn't even occurred to me - I must have a pretty good life after all.

This morning's been a good one. Was off work last night so I've had some sleep. Right now it's just me and son #2, who turns 5 in a couple of weeks. He brought me an imaginary cookie, so I played along and took a bite - and he grinned and went "Boom!"

Pretend exploding cookies. *shakes head*

A few minutes later he tried handing me another one - so I played it up. "Oh, no, you're not gonna blow me up again! I don't want that cookie!" *sniff* "Wait a sec, is that chocolate chip? It is? Well, maybe... Why is this cookie ticking? Uh oh - BOOM!"

I've read some interesting articles about people who walk away from disasters and start life all over as someone new. I find the concept fascinating.
